The Barcelona Chair is made almost completely by hand. The material and construction of the chair both are too expensive and labor-intensive for mass production and that’s why you’ll find these authentic chairs mostly in luxurious homes. Which isn’t a surprise, because the chair was originally designed for the King of Spain.

The Barcelona Chair has been an inspiration for quite a big amount of (a lot more affordable) replica models and other pieces of furniture. Some of these designs are very similar to the original design with the same ‘X’-base, but other variations only have very subtle references to the original design of this unique chair.

The frame of the Barcelona Chair was originally designed to be screwed together, but was redesigned in 1950 with the use of stainless steel, which made it possible for the frame to be shaped freely into a seamless frame. This gave the whole chair a smoother look. The frame is 12 millimeters thick and available in stainless steel or chrome. The cushions are supported by 17 strong saddle leather strips. The cushions are attached to the frame with buckles so that the cushions won’t move when you sit down.

The cushsions on the Barcelona Chair are filled with high density foam, guaranteeing an optimal sitting experience. The back- and sit parts are two separate cushions. Both cushions are 10.2 centimeters thick. The cushions are covered in high quality leather with leather. On the leather there are metal buttons, covered in leather. Each cushion has a zipper in the same color as the leather. The original Barcelona Chairs which were produced for the Pavillion on the International Expoisition in 1929 were made with goat leather. Today the Barcelona Chair is available in 56 different colors. Black, white, brown and red are the most common ones.

Barcelona Chair dimensions

The Barcelona chair’s dimensions are as follows:

  • Height: 75 centimeters (29 inches)
  • Width: 75 centimeters (29 inches)
  • Length: 75 centimeters (29 inches)

The matching ottoman has these dimensions:

  • Height: 39 centimeters (15 inches)
  • Width: 61 centimeters (24 inches)
  • Length: 59 centimeters (23 inches)

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s autograph and the logo of the manufacturer Knoll are stamped on the frame of the chair. In case these are missing, you know you’re dealing with a replica of the Barcelona Chair. Because of all the labor hours that go into making a Barcelona Chair it’s almost impossible to buy a new Barcelona Chair for less than 3000 euros. The matching ottomans are often sold for a price between 2000 and 3000 euros.

When ordering an original Barcelona Chair you can pick in what color and with what type of leather the chair should be made, so your chair goes perfectly with your interior. Besides the color and the leather you can also choose if you want the frame to be stainless steel or chrome.
